Far East, Primorye | Commander Islands (Kamchatsky District)

Kamchatka and Commander Islands are considered one of the main nature attractions of Russia. Their flora and fauna is renowned for its beauty and diversity. The scenic areas boast about 390 bird species, 800 plant species and about 200 seaweeds species. Coastal waters are home to about 400 fish species.

Tourist season lasts all year round. The most fascinating time for animal and bird watching enthusiasts is from May to October. In May the territory is in blossom, and birds’ population is the densest because of migrant flocks that stop here. In June mating games at breeding grounds of sea mammals begin, and meeting with brown bear, master of taiga, is very probable in Kamchatka. Loach fishing is allowed at this time of year; blueback and hunchback salmon come close to the shore. In July and August wild life calms down. September is the most comfortable and beautiful month with vibrant scenic colours and opportunity to have a closer look at wild inhabitants.

Commander islands used to be natural habitat for steller’s sea cow, the biggest known Pinnipedia animal. Nobody saw it during the last 100 years. It’s quite possible that some individuals still live in Medniy Island fiords.

The islands are home to only one endemic species of mammals – blue fox. Its populations live in isolation. It’s listed in the Red book.

Commander islands are home to great many sea mammals: sea otter, seal, and Arctic chopper. Pacific walrus, northern elephant seal lives here. There are about 70 breeding grounds of seal and 4 of hair-seal, as well as some of sea lion in the reserve. Chopper individuals’ number reaches 200, 15% of world population. There are about 4000 seals and 5200 sea otters on the islands. 21 cetacea species were registered in the coastal waters, 11 species are listed in the Red book. Fattening territories and migrant routes of cachalot, killer whale, sea-swine, rorqual, and fin whale are here. About 1million birds of 19 species nest in the reserve: mainly gull, fulmar, diving-pigeon. It’s a clamouring country.

Most part of the territory is tundra and grass. In damp windy climate with low temperatures during the vegetation period low procumbent plants prevail. Open spaces are home to juniper and cedar layer; valleys to willow, mountain ash, birch with cow-parsnip intervenes. Rather warm coastal waters of Commander Islands are home to more than 200 species of seaweeds. Some of plants species are listed in the Red book some need further study, preservation and inclusion in the book.
