Far East, Primorye | Shantar islands (Khabarovsk region)

The Shantars are a unique nature complex of 15 islands that form a circle round Shantar Sea.

They are to become national park in 2013. They are home to a big population of endemic bear, shantar panda and black bear –grizzly ,to 4 seal species, cowfish, sable, a lot of birds, including the legendary white sea eagle and a variety of plants.

There are capes here with finger shape cliffs, kekury, which made of basalt, marble, as well as of rose, red and green jasper.

A rock ridge divides Opasniy strait into two parts, so the water rushes eastwards and westwards on different sides of it with 37 km/h speed. Two currents form a billow of 2m high. When they merge in the Longa strait they form an enormous roaming crater with a half km diameter and 30 m deep.

A magnetic anomaly is registered here. Compass needle is rotating clockwise non-stop.

Two of the 15 islands - Arka on the west and Lev on the north part of the archipelago have a through passage.

14 day 1800 km.
